Tissue metabolism of brain cortex and liver after hypophysectomy and treatment with thyrotrophic hormone.

چکیده
THE experiments described in this paper were carried out to determine the effect of hypophysectomy and hyperthyroidism (induced by the thyrotrophic hormone of the anterior lobe of the pituitary) on the metabolism of the cerebral cortex measured in vitro, and to compare this tissue with another organ, namely liver. Up to now comparatively little work has been done from this point of view and, so far as brain is concerned, we know only the paper of Cohen & Gerard [1935] who reported that 16-19 days' treatment with thyroid powder resulted in an increase in respiratory activity of rats' brain measured in whole brain brei. As regards liver, it has already been found that injection ofthyrotrophic hormone produced an increased 02 uptake of liver and kidney. Hypophysectomy was shown to reduce the 02 consumption of liver slices about 27 % [Reiss et al. 1933, 1, 2]. The latter fact was confirmed by Victor & Andersen [1938].

Effects of hypophysectomy and corticosterone acetate treatment on hepatic lipid composition in the chick (Gallus domesticus) embryo.
Lipid is transferred from yolk to liver and to other tissues at an accelerated rate after 16 days of incubation in the intact chicken embryo. Hypophysectomy (partial decapitation) at 36 hr of incubation reduced liver lipid content on Days 16 and 18. The greatest losses on Day 18 were among cholesterol esters but decreased unesterified cholesterol and phospholipid were also observed. Treatment o...
متن کاملInteraction between growth hormone and insulin in the regulation of lipoprotein metabolism in the rat.
The importance of insulin for the in vivo effects of growth hormone (GH) on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism was investigated by examining the effects of GH treatment of hypophysectomized (Hx) female rats with and without concomitant insulin treatment. Hypophysectomy-induced changes of HDL, apolipoprotein (apo)E, LDL, and apoB levels were normalized by GH treatment but not affected by insulin t...
متن کاملHormone-Induced Variation of Phosphatidate Phosphohydrolase Activity in Various Tissues of Pregnant Rats
Variations in phosphatidate phosphohydrolase (PAP) activity and triacylglycerol concentration were measured in pregnant and hormone-treated non-pregnant female rats. PAP activity in adipose tissue was elevated by 61% during pregnancy. The increase in the enzyme activity was paralleled with a rise in serum triacylglycerol concentration (44%). Estradiol injecting into non-pregnant rats increased ...
متن کاملThe effect of cabergoline and levetiracetam on the histological and stereological structure of the cerebellar cortex, hippocampal and cerebellum in a model of PTZ-induced seizure kindling in rats
Background: Seizure is a chronic neurological disease that may have non-neurological origins such as astrocytes and microglia. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of alone and co-administration of cabergoline and levetiracetam on the histological and stereological structure of the cerebral cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum following chronic seizures in rat. Methods...
متن کاملThe effect of Aerobic Training on Serotonin and Tryptophan Hydroxylase of Prefrontal Cortex in type 2 Diabetic Rats
Background & Aims: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a self-management disease and depression is a common problem related to it. One of the causes of depression is serotonin (5-HT) depleted. The enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) is known as limiting enzyme in the production of 5-HT in the brain. Aerobic exercise also has proven benefits in treating and reducing the incidence of chronic diseases such a...
